Odyssey
noun od·ys·sey \ˈä-də-sē\: a long journey full of adventures
: a series of experiences that give knowledge or understanding to someone
1: a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune
2: an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest (Merriam-Websters Dictionary)
Sounds like life, doesn’t it — the long journey full of adventures, changing fortunes, new understandings, and gravitas-creating wisdom?
Or so we would hope, in any case.
We’re each on our very own Odyssey, and we’re on a collective Odyssey, too, in these wild and wily transformative times.
The mythic-astrology language for the archetypal Energies of Now includes:
• Neptune in Pisces,
• Uranus in Aries,
• Pluto in Capricorn — and their epic ‘square’, waning but still in effect, and
• Chiron in Pisces.
And we can’t leave out the astro-headliners of this year, Saturn in Sagittarius doing the tango with Neptune (and Chiron) in Pisces.

If that’s not enough excitement and energy alchemy, the upcoming Mars Retrograde is right on the near horizon.
Mars Retrograde is when Mars, a.k.a. our ‘lifeforce’ and passion, draws inward and goes on a bit of a “How am I using my energy and Lifeforce?” vision quest.
Unlike many planets, Mars doesn’t retrograde every year, so it’s a key element in the archetypal energy mix for this year, affecting everyone … and some of us more than others.
Never a dull moment, as the saying goes, though Lifeforce — energy — is always dynamic.
It’s a heavenly and energetic-psychic party … and As Above, So Below; As ‘Out There’, So It Is Within.
But with maps and clues and fresh insights, we can lean into the greater potentials and possibilities, orient into a sense of greater purpose, and maybe even have a wee bit of fun while we’re at it.
And there’s this: It’s a bit more confidence-boosting to have a clue vs. being, well, clueless, yes?

Seeing it as our personal & collective Vision Quest … or Odyssey.
As all of us Journeyers know, these mythic lenses and maps are a great help as we orient ourselves along these byways where the old ways of navigation, the current-paradigm maps, no longer work as easily … or at all.
In the myth of the Odyssey, Odysseus sets forth to return home after the Trojan War, only to find that it takes him 10 years with many setbacks, wrong turns, losses, and unexpected travails, all gratis the obstructions created by the formidable Roman god of the Seas, Neptune (or Poseidon, to the Greeks).
Some of you may be more familiar with Neptune — knowingly or not.
If you’ve had what in mythic and archetypal astrology is known as the Neptune Transit, during which you have a bit more of an up close and personal encounter with the archetypal energy of Neptune.

Neptune transits — conjunctions, squares, oppositions — are known to accompany experiences of heightened sensitivity, dissolution, depression, heart-openings, reclaimed imagination, and visionary breakthroughs, to name just a few.
Sound familiar?
I’ve written about it before, having navigated Neptunian seas for a good bit of time, like Odysseus, so you’ll find links to a few of those posts within this one.
And I revisited a particularly apt bit of wisdom from Mythic Astrology: Archetypal Powers in the Horoscope and wanted to share it with you:
I know that more than a few of you are in the midst of Neptune (and Pals) transits as we speak, and my fellow Generation X ‘Sixties Babies’ cohorts are in the Neptune Pisces opposition to our Uranus-Pluto-Virgo conjunctions, and in the major milestone Chiron Return zone, among other possible activations and aspects.
(More in this S.C. post about Mid-60s-born Gen-X Phoenixing underway now.)
Yes, that means you’re still getting lit up, a.k.a. initiated! (Email me — info ‘at’ sophias-children ‘dot’ com — for an astro-reading to see where you are in this unfolding.)
As for the Neptune energy-archetype, in Mythic Astrology, authors Ariel Guttman and Kenneth Johnson speak of how “many people feel that they can’t see where they are going while under a transit of Neptune.”
This is true. In addition to the immensely heightened sensitivity, it feels like one’s clarity, vision, structure has suddenly dissolved, or is immersed in a thick fog.
In the words of a dream I had as Neptune conjoined my Sun and Saturn (and opposed and squared various other planetary pals), I had to “learn to see with my other eyes.”
Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
It was pretty challenging, actually, because I’d been thoroughly conditioned away from my Neptunian-Piscean ‘self parts’ and conditioned towards my more Saturnian-Capricornian self-facets.
So the good long Neptune & Pals transits dissolved, shook, stirred all of that conditioning to bits.
Ultimately, with a fair bit of that in hindsight now, I can honestly say that it’s been a very rich journey of remembering and reclamation of buried treasure.
In Mythic Astrology, Guttman and Johnson continue,

“This is what people are so fearful about when Neptune transits occur — they no longer seem to function in the rational, linear world the way they once did.
Their way of outer adaptation no longer works. Everything beings to crumble; nothing makes sense anymore.
The ego has to dissolve or step aside for awhile while Neptune throws its net over our charted course, thereby forcing us to learn by other means, i.e. by trusting our intuitive faculties or by learning to develop them if they don’t already exist.” (p. 169)
“Thus one of Neptune’s jobs may be to encourage the opening of the third eye, to develop trust and reliance on faith and a higher power that comes when an individual no longer is able to control his or her own course.” (p.168)
In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew are welcomed by the adept magia, wise woman, and goddess Circe.

Circe, from one reading of the story, is both initiating Priestess-Goddess to Odysseus, and ultimately one who tells him how to find his way home despite the remaining challenges they will face on their voyage.
That’s one clue to navigating Neptune’s initiations along the Way, and Guttman and Johnson expand on that hint in the excerpt I’ve shared — learning to see with our other eyes, and navigate our way by intuition and other medial, oracle-Feminine ways of seeing.
The adventure — or our unique Odyssey — continues to flow, evolve, unfold and initiate us into the transformation catalysts we are.

Lovely post and artwork Jamie. I am in the Neptune trine Neptune cycle and just leaving Neptune Pluto opposition and Neptune square MH/IC axis. I like your descriptions, very accurate and poetic ( poetry is ruled by Neptune 🙂 )
Hope you received my latest emails. My email provider has been acting up lately!
LIfe is a highway with plenty of twists and turns….

Hey there, Linda. First, I see an email from you in my queue from today, so that’s on the read-roster.
With Neptune, yep, we’re in sync with the Neptune-trine-Neptune, oppo Pluto (and my Uranus as well), etc., though you’ve got the square to the MC/IC, and it’s just waning out of square orb with my moon. Woo hoo!
Lots of magic with the Neptune activations, though quite different from the dominant ways of the culture.
Love,
Jamie

So your moon is in aspect with your Pluto Uranus, wow! My Gem moon is later in Gem, in fact Chiron will be squaring my Venus Moon opposition shortly, woohoo ( not)
But that is off topic. I love my Neptune and it is interwoven into the fabric of my being this time out, but it can be misty or nasty, depending upon your view…
love, Linda

Yes, indeed, moon is square with Uranus but just barely out of the usual orb with Pluto (though I know moon-Pluto peeps out there!). Venus and moon seem to get along well, though, so perhaps the square will be more lovely than you’d think? I like Neptune pretty well, too, and that’s a very good thing. 🙂 Love, Jamie

oh I LOVE the story of Odysseus- AND I love that there are asteroids (and other cosmic bodies) with carrying the name (and thus the metaphoric energies) of the characters from Homer’s classic tale. MY natal Neptunian sits 4 degrees from my 10th house Scorpio sun – at 15 degrees- the “Samhain” cross-quarter exact marker and the Goddess Medea and my Child asteroid also sit at that 15 degrees spot exactly. I now understand why my visual art is so spirit infused- it can not NOT be. I also recently learned where Circe, Penelope and Odysseus fall in my chart- it is soooo very fascinating…and telling. Thanks for this article 🙂

It is beautiful, fascinating, and fun. And as you noted from your Neptune’s positioning with Medea and Child, rich with insight, too. We share the Neptune positioning … mine, too, is at 15 Neptune (interacting boldly with other planetary pals in the chart!). I’m glad you enjoyed the article (I enjoy looking at the artwork you share via your blog as well). xoxo Jamie

Ah, yes…“many people feel that they can’t see where they are going while under a transit of Neptune.” Neptune has been dancing around my moon (and Jupiter) at the bottom of my chart for the past few years, and for the past few years I’ve trying to figure out where I want to live. Looking for “home” like Odysseus! With my bat freed from suspension and Jupiter exact on my Sun, hopefully some clarity soon!
Thanks for another awesome post Jamie! <3

May it be so, Julianne Victoria. And wow, I hadn’t considered that with the Neptune-Moon dance and the “looking for home” (very much like Odysseus) — me, too, as well as being called back to the home of my earlier life (not the exact house, but the region and place) during these recent years.
I love the ‘bat freed from suspension’ medicine … really beautiful, and yes, may clarity and the perfect home be yours, soon (and by Grace)!
Love,
Jamie

I, too, was called back and have been in my childhood/ancestral home these few years. So ready to leave! Thank you for your blessing and blessings to you!
May 9, 2015 at 7:21 pm
Well, similar paths weaving for us, including be so ready to … move along, and having to be more patient than we might wish (per your bat post, I noticed this common thread.) 🙂
Thank you, too, for the blessings, Julianne Victoria. I gratefully receive them! xoxo Jamie

I just saw this comment stream.
Yes! I so relate to the “looking for home” but also the creation of home wherever we are, since we don’t know how long we’ll be here. For a wanderer like me, staying in one place this long — LOL, especially *this* place — feels more challenging than just moving along to the next beautiful, resonant spot. I’ve never needed to invest this much into a community before, because if the community didn’t fit or meet my deepest needs, I just moved somewhere that did.
Putting down roots — figuratively and most definitely quite literally with all the things I’m planting — sometimes feels like Odysseus reaching “home” and finding things weren’t quite how he remembered them. Time to reinvent what home means! Love, Laura

Thanks for adding to the richness of this conversation tapestry, Laura. It’s so true, what you share … one of those very Feminine ‘and/both’ rather than ‘either/or’. And in some ways there may be a unique beauty to bringing love to a place (and the spirits of that place) that has/have been neglected, unappreciated, and abused. As you have done there where you are now, and have shared in your blog posts. That’s a truly beautiful thing. I love the invitation to reinvent what ‘home’ means. Love, Jamie

Thanks, Jamie, and I love that you are another one who recognizes the value of and/both in a world so determined to make us choose either/or. 🙂 Love, Laura
May 11, 2015 at 6:13 pm
Me, too. It does seem such a simple thing, and/both. 🙂 Love, Jamie

Thanks to Jamie for bringing up the Neptune transit, which is affecting so many individuals and the collective during this bizarre adventure known as “present times.” A clue there: be present. Remain present as the journey unfolds. I’ve always felt intrigued that Mennonite and right wing Christian dominated Goshen has a huge statue of Neptune/Poseidon in front of City Hall. Between our wild, wild yard and the completely unfitting perfect fit here, David and I have been “getting Neptuned” for years. I know many readers and clients have, too.

Thanks for reblogging and sharing the post, Laura. I smiled at the mention of the statue of Neptune/Poseidon right there in front of City Hall. Maybe it was, at some ancient time, a sea. 🙂 And ‘unfitting perfect it’ … perfect. Love, Jamie

Though the Energies of Now are taking on more Fire where we’ve had an ocean of Water in recent weeks, the sensitive, watery, tidal essence of the Neptunian-Piscean is still very much in play.
I have several fresh musings on deck for you, but with my own ‘Astro-Mystery School chart ruler’ still swimming through Pisces (that’d be Venus, my friends) along with Neptune, I’m still gathering pearls at the (energetic and psychic) seaside.
But Fire and Water create steam, or hydro-thermal baths, or boiling water … actually, and metaphorically speaking.
Lest we bubble over or get too steamy (in ways we’d rather not), here’s an Energies of Now bulletin.
I’ve chosen a ‘Middle Way’ option, and freshly updated this very timely Neptune (and Pals) and Your Personal Odyssey article.
Fire and Water will continue to be foremost elements in the Energies of Now, so this is a timely reminder … and an Orienteering clue-guide as well.
Wishing you happy and wise navigating as we ready for a new season … and a new (astro and seasonal) year.
Big Love,
Jamie

While I do plan to actually re-read this article Jamie, my Gemini moon latched onto the title and then gasped with awe at your magic carpet image. This is at least the second time we have independently chosen the same beautiful striking images to adorn our content.
Great minds ( and spirits) …

Sister Gemini Moons with the Neptune Muses’ inspiration. 🙂 That’s one of my favorites, Linda … on the top 20 if not the top 10, so I stir it back up to the surface again here and there. It’s a great visual. I do the same with a couple of my other favorite paintings … they make reappearances as the mood (and Muse) stirs me. 😉 xoxo Love, Jamie

I was born with a Neptune influence but that still doesn’t make it easy sailing through Neptune’s transits.

True enough, Patricia. The Neptune effect seems an ongoing mastery practice. Now, as you well know, Neptune waves its juju into the Mutable axis … across to Virgo, for those of us with the Uranus-Pluto conjunction, and then any Gemini, Sag, Pisces stuff. Your write-ups on the 60s gen-x remains one of my favorites. 🙂 Hope you’re well.
