“The law of attraction is a wildly-popular modern mystical belief hyped as the secret to fulfilling your every desire. It has big celebrity endorsements, and commercial products rehashing its claims sell in abundance.

But beneath the glossy façade there’s often an agenda pushing egocentrism and greed in metaphysical garb, which limits consciousness and subverts spirituality for shallow materialistic ends.”

~ Matthew Butler, “How Materialism Posing as Mysticism Limits Consciousness and Subverts Spirituality,” Waking Times

The Law of Fauxtraction ‘glossy façade’ that Matthew speaks of is well and cleverly crafted, and has a very specific agenda that has little to do with our wellbeing.

It’s not just the New Age spirituality, of course; any of the spiritual paths can be and have been co-opted as ‘covers’ to serve more dubious or outright toxic aims.

One of the purposes of actual spiritual wisdom and practice is to liberate us from the ‘gilded cages’ of conditioning — to transform lead into gold, and dross into the grail elixir.

But while real transformation offers pearls of great price as the reward, it requires something of us — often involving Hero Journeys and Dark Nights.

That makes it inconvenient in an age of the pretty surfaces and quick fixes of the Spiritual Bypass Zone that keep us distracted while the Earth is poisoned and our minds and energy are vamped.

Which leads us to the craftily disguised illusion of spirituality, a veneer of sorts, that serves a very different deity and aims to keep us diminished — dim-witted — and those tethers in place, and strengthen them if at all possible.

In my Feminine Mojo Blog post, “Beyond the Fear and Shame of Our Moolocracy,” I mused on this prickly topic of the Money God and mammon worship and the very seductive story-lures (a.k.a. the neuro-marketing that keeps the rat-race running).

“I’ve been looking into how the ‘mystical greed’ is fed during this transit of Pluto through Capricorn, and how it satisfies the longings of Neptune in Pisces by cloaking greed in the illusion of being spiritual,” says my friend and astro-seer Molly Hall, who explores some of these ‘hidden agendas’ and richer potentials in a recent article on Pluto in Capricorn and what’s being revealed and reclaimed.

This is the more dangerous spectre of faux-spirituality — a type of sorcery, really — that leads and lures away from our Divine Gifts and reinforces scarcity, isolation, and fear.

And the antidote, as it often is, is the real-deal, age-old, “get your hands dirty” version of spirituality, whose wisdom and practices beckon us out of ‘fear spin’ and into our hearts, illuminated.

After all, what we put into the world is what we help the world become.

The great adventure and journey continues …

Big Love (and Courage on the Way),
