“In her final session with Jung, social activist Isabelle Hamilton Rey was told to “Go home and live it now.” As she wrote to her husband,

“I did what I came here to do — touch the hem of Dr. Jung’s psychological skirt — but it all seems so different now; I think I looked for a sort of spiritual baptism, which would ensure protection and perfect understanding; instead it seems to me I have undertaken the tremendous responsibility of maintaining a standard of consciousness which is most difficult. I can never turn back, but God knows the prospect ahead isn’t easy either.”

~ From Carl Jung: Wounded Healer of the Soul by Claire Dunne

Jung had wrapped their last session with Hamilton Rey by saying, “Go home and live it now.”

A similar insight was voiced by one of Jung’s contemporaries, the psychiatrist Alfred Adler, who said, “It is always easier to fight for one’s principles than to live up to them.

Transformative spirituality is about closing that gap between the ‘talk’ and the ‘walk’.

For me, that’s an ongoing experiment that I have to re-dedicate myself to again and again. It’s a really, really worthwhile experiment and guiding intention, though.

Your sense (whether you call it ‘spirituality’, or call it something else)?

And a p.s. — It’s International Women’s Day, though for many of us it always is (parsing out a single day to any enormous group of people, while demonstrating questionable behavior the rest of the year, seems a bit … stingy and hypocritical, yes?).

Yet practicing and experimenting into those wonderful ideas and values and possibilities … quite an amazing, often wonderful, often humbling, always worthwhile adventure.
