In our mythic stories, Persephone — among others — symbolizes and speaks to us about the innocent ‘maiden’ Feminine that, through the spirals of initiation and Underworld-born mastery, emerges as the initiated Wise Woman, the wisened, reclaimed, experience-matured Feminine.
Steve Nelson also shared an ally-understanding about the importance of Cybele (and there are others), and the deeper and broader awareness of the mysteries of energy that our ancestral wisdom included.
He affirmed, “Cybele governs primal energy training, something our culture dearly needs.”
By ‘primal energy training’, Steve meant wisdom-sourced awareness of the energies of Life, energies of Now, and how we dance and create collaboratively and wisely with them (or get jerked around the dance floor, so to speak, until we become more aware).
Persephone, Cybele, Circe, and other ‘teaching stories’ remind us and stir alive the deep ancestral memory of these Mysteries and the areas of wisdom and knowing that were squelched or severed, uprooted or mutated into more toxic expressions over the generations of often-violent Dominator Culture incursions.

It’s been re-awakening, though, stirred alive by Life herself because the balance of life has been violated and the wisdom is once again needed in the collective.
So, as often happens in natural systems, it begins to come alive at the fringes and sends its slender root-tendrils into the collective.
But it also requires more than just the surface-skating ‘spiritual entertainment’ approach flourishing in our social-media, tweet-length attention spans.
All powerful emerging waves of potential awakening get co-opted in a Dominator culture, the attention and thus the energy diverted into culture-maintaining and consumption-strengthening memes and entertainments.
Awakening wisdom and certainly the initiations from ‘maiden awareness’ to initiated Wise Woman requires dedication, resilience, perseverance, but births pearls and rubies beyond price.
It’s substance more than surface-veneer; quality over quantity.
And it’s more important than we realize for the reason hinted at by this little koan:
The sun doesn’t know its own brilliance until it’s reflected back by the light of the full moon. (JW)

Here’s a link I originally posted on my Facebook page, a sane look at the discounts women face as they grow older and are no longer taken seriously. In a youth culture, it’s hard to embrace and live the feminine wisdom of one’s later years and stages of development.
