Greetings, fellow Sophians.
Here’s another lovely and timely musing from Anne Whitaker from her Writing From the 12th House blog, with a mention of another kindred spirit sister, Molly Hall. Double the insight and good!
And it’s perfect for this Dark Moon, or Moondark, time that we’re in (and since it comes each month, and in any other Deep Yin time (meditation, night, etc.), it’s always a good time for this insight).
With the new moon arriving tonight (Eastern Time, and then through the crescent moon in a few days), it’s a good time to rejuvenate, restore, and re-collect, and listen deeply for your Heart’s true yearnings that can inform the vision-seeds for this lunar cycle.
So gather yourself back to center, call home your exiled selves, and see what new insights and brilliant questions — the ones that open up the most whole-hearted possibilities — arise from the wellspring within your deepest core and heart of hearts.
I was born in the very last hours of Moondark…and find that it’s best to note Moondark periods in my new diary each year. At these times, each month, I find that I need even more time than usual (having several 12th House planets anyway) to retreat, be in silence, drift, and dream…let my mind wander.
This is what I am able to do today, on the last day of Moondark. I’d be interested in others’ experiences of this phenomenon – and its impact especially at those times which happen to us all, when LIFE requires us to engage, to be busy, to stay focused. What are you doing today as you wait for the Cancer New Moon tomorrow?
Having googled “Writing about Moondark”, I found this fine article, a compilation of others’ writings by astrologer Molly Hall. (see full attribution at the end.) It is well written and…

My pleasure, Anne. I reblogged before I even put a comment on your post! I love dark moon, or moondark. Delicious. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration. Love, Jamie
Having read this, and Anne’s article (and Molly’s), I then came across this lovely piece on the Balsamic Moon (plus fairy tale wisdom) by Dana Gerhardt.: http://www.astro.com/astrology/in_dg_balsamic_e.htm. Today is also when images of Pluto materialize on Earth, which is fun and/or prophetic and/or healing timing, don’t you think? 😉

Thanks for sharing that one on the balsamic moon, Dayna (which makes me think of balsamic vinegar … it’s always about the food with me! I’m a Taurus Rising, earth-sensual Venus Ruled, what can I say? ;).
And it seems very interesting and timely indeed that we’re seeing these photos of Pluto, arriving at the dark moon and then Cancerian New Moon.
Ya know, I think the Pluto and deep-healing connection isn’t mentioned or intuited much, so that’s a good insight there, Dayna. Prophetic and deep-healing, it does feel that way (particularly after Pluto was ‘demoted’ in 2006 and is coming around in vivid clarity now? Hmmm, what other connections between 2006 and now?).
Oooo, excellent point about Pluto’s demotion (and 2006! I had to give myself a little space to contemplate 2006. How many lifetimes ago that was, oof!). Prophetic indeed.
I find Balsamic distracting too: I keep picturing vineyards in Italy…
Very interesting that the Pluto healing connection isn’t mentioned much. I’m germinating an essay worth of thoughts on that one….I really like the idea of our whole planet developing a relationship with Pluto (whether you find the images/info super exciting, or shrug at a giant malt ball in space, you’re still in relationship, where maybe you weren’t before…). ‘Vivid clarity’ – I like that – and of course that moondark image of Pluto’s big heart!
And now I want malt. Dang it.

It’s a favorite time, to be sure. And ‘moondark’ is lovely … it kind of suits how delicious ‘moondark’ feels if we honor it, yes?
